Protecting Your Skin in the Summer: Simple Tips for Healthy Skin
Summer brings longer days, plenty of sunshine, and outdoor activities, making it important to step up your skin protection routine. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to sunburn, accelerated skin aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Here are some essential strategies for protecting your skin:
Choose the Right Sunscreen
Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30. SPF 30 effectively blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays. Higher SPF values offer slightly more protection, but regular reapplication is essential. Apply generously to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Important Note on Sunscreen Safety
There is growing concern—and ongoing review by the FDA—regarding certain chemical sunscreen ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and homosalate. These compounds have been shown in some studies to be absorbed through the skin and may potentially act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone function. While more research is needed to confirm long-term effects, many health-conscious consumers are choosing to minimize exposure to these chemicals, especially for children, pregnant women, and individuals with sensitive skin.
If this is a concern for you or your family, consider switching to mineral-based (physical) sunscreens, which are generally recognized as safe and effective. These products use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to create a protective barrier on the skin that reflects harmful UV rays without being absorbed into the body.
Recommended mineral-based options include:
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 45+ – gentle and effective for sensitive skin and daily facial use
Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen SPF 50+ – great for children, water-resistant, and free of harmful additives
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ – reliable for body use, especially in outdoor or athletic settings
Badger Unscented Zinc Oxide SPF 30 – organic, reef-safe, and biodegradable
Choosing a mineral sunscreen can offer peace of mind without compromising on sun protection.
Seek Shade During Peak Hours
Sun rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Limit outdoor activities during these peak times or actively seek shade whenever possible.
Wear Protective Clothing
Cover up with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses to minimize sun exposure and protect sensitive skin areas like the face, ears, and eyes.
Hydrate and Moisturize
Maintain adequate hydration by drinking plenty of water, which helps skin remain healthy and resilient. Regularly applying moisturizer can also reinforce your skin’s protective barrier, keeping it hydrated and less prone to irritation or sun damage.
Regular Skin Checks
Frequently inspect your skin for changes, paying attention to any new or changing moles, freckles, or skin lesions. Early detection is critical in effectively treating skin cancer. Schedule regular skin checks with your primary care provider or dermatologist, particularly if you notice irregularities or have a family history of skin cancer. Professional skin examinations provide additional peace of mind and expert evaluation.
Enjoy your summer responsibly—your skin deserves thorough and consistent protection!
